I wipe the sweat from my eyes. IT drips from under my helmet. the quarterback calls the play, a short pass to the wide-out, also known as me. the ball is snapped, bodies slam together, one side trying to get the QB the other trying to protect him. I take off, running past the guy trying to cover me, the ball hits my diamond and I pull it down. I keep running praying my guys keep their blocks up. All of a sudden i hear them. Footsteps. Close to me. Pounding, rhythmic, getting closer. I push myself harder, the footsteps get louder, closer. the endzone is close but they are closer.I wait for the shock of the hit but push harder. As I get to the endzone and look around, there was no one nearby. The footsteps were my own.
