  6. I cannot sleep without you. I cannot dream without you. Only nightmares. Nightmares of what we were and what we had. It was magic, taking my breath away every single day. Maybe that is why I’m dead now. Un-moving, for there is nothing to live for anymore. How painful it is to look at photographs of us, of you, of your brown hair, your blue eyes, the way your teeth shine, the way your arms feel against mine. How our hands fit perfectly together like a puzzle; without one piece it’s not complete. Moving on is too hard, for there is no such way to move on from this dark empty whole inside of me, where my heart once rested, pounding with love, feeling something powerful. But now all I feel is loneliness, so lonely I can’t feel anything at all. I’ll continue to hear your voice outside my door, I’ll continue to water the roses that you left, I’ll continue to put two plates on the table, one for me one for you. Even though you’re gone. Thank you for the memories. Even though they burn.

  7. It’s an animal. With horns. It lives in the forest. Eats grass. Drinks water. It’s fast. And people love to hunt that animal. A deer is very easy to scare.

  10. Daddy hunted deer when I was younger. I always enjoyed going with him, to deer camp at least. I never got into going to shoot defenseless animals, but I did enjoy getting to spend time riding 4-wheelers, cooking with mommy, and gossiping with the women. It was weird for me being the only girl child, and I never really liked being the youngest.

  14. I often see deer on the side of the road, as I’m driving home from work on Blagden St. I take Blagden St not because its the quickest route to work or the best route, but because it is the most scenic route. There are deer, for God’s sake. In the middle of the urban wasteland, there is an oasis of suburbia, complete with streets without sidewalks. And I love it.

    Diane
  15. the thing was right there glowing green eyes chewing and like a large rabbit because it was dark and deer have dubious manners. they

  16. There was tons of deer on the side of the road. Tons of them. She remembers when her mother used to say to drive slow, just to be careful. But at this point she’d never get to the hospital. It wouldn’t be prudent to listen to her mother just this once.

  17. It looked at me, just staring. I had almost hit, came so close. What would have happened then? The poor animal, majestic in all it’s beauty. It stared at me, with those eyes of it. They bored through me, judging me, curiosity shining through. I wondered what he was thinking about then. Did he know how close he had come to an encounter with death?

  22. deer are really the stupidest creatures. You wouldnt think so because they are so elegant but they are. Here in nj they cause so many car accidents that the state encourages hunting them. I mean seriously i bet the roads are clear more then they are busy but deer always find a way to get hit. even a small child knows to look both sides then cross but deer just dont get it

  23. in headlights as i’m driving by your house. and no, i don’t just mean my expression. i was only there to see if your car was. not for some creepy reason but because, i don’t know, i wanted to know for certain you were home? no one saw me. at least, you didn’t see me so why does it matter? so, i’m pulling a k turn when, there…i see her…or him, but nothing that delicate can be male. nothing that sweet can possibly be anything other than a lady. and she’s looking at me. not judging or…punishing me for doing what i’m doing. just looking. understanding, maybe. knowing what it’s like to lose something. and i take a second. i breathe with her. we breathe together.

  24. Deer are not uncommon, where I live. It is not unusual to turn on the traffic report, and hear news of a deer on one of the city’s main roads.
And not too long ago, somebody my mother knows was in a car accident involving a moose on a highway. The young lady that my mum knows is critically ill, and the other girl is in hospital. These things happen, I suppose.

  25. in the headlights. stuck and caught and never to be freed. That’s one of the bohemian ideals. I’ve made a study of them and observations of life. I guess I’m an amateur sociologist. All I want is to figure everything out. But even I don’t want all of the answers. Why am I so elegant? I can’t even answer that. It just has to do with the way you move.

  31. A little thing, just a faun. It stared up at me, over the barrel of my metal monster, as though it didn’t know what death was or just how it close it was to the wrong end of a bullet. I couldn’t shoot it. I had no reason to…I mean, it wasn’t good for meat or nuffin’…But it’s mother and father had to be ’round here somewhere. Although, sitting alone in the woods with a faun staring down your rifle’s barrel you just start to question whether or not you have the guts to go shoot its only chance of survival in this cold world.

  34. A deer a female deer, I don’t like the idea of gender roles, or roles at all and then I remember that I much prefer 1910 in New York and it was all about breaking gender roles and so I guess I like them or how else can I break them. See where I’m going with all this.

  35. When you and I were young, we would imagine entire kingdoms in a large field behind your house. The house was a large stone building, straight out of the 19th century English countryside. In the field, which once was the home to many cows, grew vast quantities of grass taller than our braided heads. One day as we were exploring, we came across a trampled clearing. Our colorful imaginations thought at once that it must have been the fairies who lived in the field and made the flowers grow. We travelled back across the weaving path we had created, and found your mother. She explained to us that the nest must have been created by deer as they rested for the night. “Deer are nomads,” she explained, “The roam free, looking for food, and sleeping when the become too tired to continue”. You and I decided that would be the life, but for now a nap would do. Tiredly we climbed the stairs and within minutes we were fast asleep, entangled together on your bed. While we slept we dreamt of deer and fields, and the things we would discover tomorrow.
