I’ll begin the demonstration in just a moment, but I want to be sure that I have everyone’s attention, please!” The curly-haired brunette raised her hands. “Hello, yes, excuse me. Yes.” She nodded and waved. “Good, thank you all. Now, this demonstration will take place in two parts.” She gestured towards one half of the arena. “As you are aware, this is the final stage in your coming of age cremony and you will be judged in several categories, which will be tallied at the end and your score will determine what skill level you are awarded for your efforts.

    The bell sounded.

Across the arena, several young men and women stepped into the muddy ring. The tallest young man drew a short sword and rolled to the left. The others followed suit, retrieving their gifted weapons and spreading out across the oval fighting space.

I don’t have that much to say about this! it’s an ugly word. I wish to never see it again, but I know I will, because such is life.

  12. Here, allow me to demonstrate for you how NOT to be a good friend. Step 1, be clinically depressed. Step 2, refuse any and all forms of help for said clinical depression, opting instead to use your friend as a crutch for your crippling sadness and self-loathing. Step 3, take advantage of your friend’s kindness and guilt-trip them into spending every waking moment of their day with you, even though she is a solitary being by nature and needs a certain number of lonely hours each day to keep sane. Step 4, make these waking moments even more unbearable by constantly belittling yourself, refusing any and all compliments and attempts at consolation, and becoming sullen at the mention of random, perfectly mundane things such as friends and fun.

    Repeat.

  19. I went down to the demonstration to see what shit the capitol had dolled out in the form of their stupid police today. It was Gale. I ran on stage and ripped the whip from the hands of the newest head of police and hit him across the face with it knowing that I’d get just as bad, if not worse of a punishment for doing so. I didn’t care. That was my friend. And what ever it was that he’d done to deserve the lashing was only out of self-preservation and in an attempt to feed his own family.

  29. The demonstration was a silly thing, really, since they all knew that the people on the stage were sure bets to get into the academy. But the dean, well, he had his. . . philosophies, you could say, and demanded that they give the usually required demonstration anyways. The rest of the staff and I, well, we though that it was more of an event to attract people to our school, but nothing could be done to stop the man.
