There’s nothing else that we are truly “given”, so we might as well enjoy it while we can!

  33. I was given a present for my birthday. This present was no ordinary present. Most presents consist of clothes, or cards, or gift certificates. No, this was no ordinary gift. This gift changed my life. I opened the paper slowly. Light flooded out from the paper, blinding me with every inch of paper I pulled back. My uncle was giving me this gift for my sixteenth birthday. He waited until everyone else left the room. I couldn’t fathom what could be so secret…so…important. When I finished unwrapping, I wasn’t sure what to think. The book glowed like a flashlight, but the light didn’t make me look away. It invited me in. I had to know what was in the book. I couldn’t even read the title, but I knew the book would give me answers to everything I ever wanted to know. Give me reasons for everything I’ve questioned. Give me an excuse to keep living. This book held secrets, and I was damn sure about to find them out.

People take a lot of things for granted, thinking that they’re all givens. This is the unfortunate aspect of life.
