  21. the hillside was her favorite place when she was younger. she enjoyed its green grass, its abundance of wildflowers, and most of all, she enjoyed the view of her small town from the top of it. it used to be her favorite place, but now it was all ashes and dust.

  22. I’ve seen the way the grass grows on this part of the hillside, where the sun hits at an angle that nearly turns it silver instead of gold. I’d tell you if it was green, but the glare is so strong from the sky that I have to squint to look at the modest slope. I can tell you how it feels, though – how cool it is against the soles of my bare feet, how it feels like new hair between my toes. Like it’s a part of me. A part of my childhood. A part of my sanity.

  27. Hillside reminds me of sitting on a nice hill eating a picnic under a tree in the sun or something like that, I live on a street called hillside also so that reminds of home, and about moving and how my life changed in the past nine months. Going from living in Victoria to living in Lake Cowichan is hard to adjust to, its so much smaller and quieter, and you’re more likely to run into someone you know rather than a stranger. Everyone at school knows each of other, having over 300 kids there from 4-12 compared to in Victoria where high schools have 1500+ from 9-12. Having littler kids means more teacher time for help and understanding so you get a better education that way. I never really liked the amount of people at those schools which is why I sort of do like living in Lake Cowichan.
