  17. a microphone is something that used to give me electric shocks. Was it worth it? Riding the fear and pain for that chance to stand on a stage and show off? And why the hell was I so prone to getting them? When you’re on stage under the influence it’s hard to push put out the thought that people have actually died from these dangerous items.

  19. as i stood in front of the audience, microphone in hand, i lost myself. i could only concentrate on this strange object, on how it worked, on how it gave me the power to convey my thoughts, feelings, emotions to this room of strangers. funny, a comedian can make a room of strangers laugh for an hour, a man can rule a nation for years, a priest can teach a lesson all with microphone in hand.

I know I want one, I know I want my own when we’re at the videoke.

It helps me pretend I’m an actual rock star. Or Madonna. Or part of the Beatles.

All I have to do is hold on to it, sing my heart out, and my voice is not mine, but the world’s.

It’s not that pleasant, but at least I’m just in a little room. Sometimes with nobody else to hear me.

  31. recording your words, but not your thoughts. It might record a tone of your voice that reflects the thoughts and intentions behind them, but it can never get the whole picture. It doesn’t record whether the words are your own, or read from an autocue. It doesn’t record your resistance to speak the words prescribed to you. It can’t record everything.

  40. A michrophone is an object that allows my voice to be heard. It spreads the sound waves to every person in an audience. It makes sure that not one word is missed or left out. Without it, my singing would be like whispering, and no one would hear my voice. I would be a mute.
