  2. A bead of sweat rolled down his cheek and hung on the edge of his chin. He swiped at it with one bandaged hand and continued to stare out into the darkened expanse. There was something out there, he could sense it.

There was the entire wave of unnatural heat, if nothing else, that gave it all away. He bit his lip–a little harder than necessary–the spike of pain reminded him that this was indeed real.

  16. The salty sweat drips soft on this long love
We tried so many times, over and over.
We ran through fields and waded rivers to find it:
Love, or some semblance of it. And all the sweat fell:
Sweet upon our brows as a reminder of the long lost days.
We will never live there again.

  17. Summer skies blaze bluer than anything you ever remembered, even more so than her eyes. Dry grass tickles like phantom ants against your feet as stand just out of reach of the fingered shade, trying, almost asking, for the sun to burn you. Waving wilted fields of browning corn extend before you and whisper in unease under the scorching light. You lazily scoop a handfull of dry, crumbling earth in your cupped caloused hands; watch in fascination as the hot breeze lifts it in a single breath and spreads it far–far enough that it disperses into the brilliant sky above the forest of corn.
You wish you could follow, exripate your half-exposed roots from the shallow dirt and drift away on the breeze, to find where she wound up away from this dry, cracking, dead-end earth. To find a different way to be.
You wipe the sweat from your brow.
