Sometimes I think about the way I sit quietly in a room full of fast talkers and idea makers and wonder if I have anything to contribute. But support is just as crucial, just as important, as leading the way. It takes all of us, even when we are quiet.
The crowds cheered as he went through the tunnel of the mass that came to support him. The faces blurred together, a riot of colors and smiles.
Yet, amidst the sea of adoring gazes, he couldn’t take his mind of what he did not see, the eyes that didn’t meet his. He wanted her to be there, he needed her to be there. How could victory hold meaning if she wasn’t there to celebrate it with him?
Coach Hamil’s arm settled on his shoulder, as his voice rang through the jubilant roar. “Do you hear that, son? That’s the sound of unity.”
Unity. It seemed insane. To be surrounded by so many who had gathered in solidarity, yet yearn desperately for a single glance from her. Crazy how one could drown in the faces of admiration, yet suffocate in the absence of the one he needed to see the most…
“Unity?” Tara spits the word out with venom, face growing hot. “How can you talk about unity at a time like this?!”
“Lower your voice, Jesus…” Adam reaches out a hand for her, but she takes a deliberate, if not exaggerated step backward, nearly tripping over the ottoman. “This is the only way out of this mess, Tara. You’re in deep just as much as I am. So we either do it together, or not at all. And I don’t think you want to go down that road.”

Warring factions within, battles fought, never won. Deadlock and livelock, endlessly playing. The top dog nags and demands while the underdog whines and manipulates. All this striving, stretching, and straining within the skin of a single individual, an attempt to find harmony and to integrate as one whole, peaceful person. Running hard in the wrong direction. Well done superior mind of the human species.

always on separate ends of earth
our insides craving proximity
the more we want it
the less we have it
we stopped existing as one
you’re missing from me
and i’m absent from you
we’re yearning for each other
from afar.

unity, unity on all fronts! the commands come from high up, out of the way, not in the front lines. not with the rest of our bruised, broken bodies. we stand united. under god? under man? who cares, as long as we get to cry victory in the end.

Together, twined round each other like strands of a braid, my strength is yours, my stride matches your own, no one ahead or behind.
