  2. I have crossed the equator a number of times in both the Indian and Atlantic oceans on a warship and a number of times by aircraft. Once I even swam across.

  4. I don’t care. It’s like the middle of stuff. Earthwise, it’s mostly hot. Uganda has a line. Some other countries are in the middle too. Equality sounds similar. I like equality.

  8. The line across her torso wasn’t visible, but it’s force was felt every time he laid his hand on her. It was a line that he couldn’t cross. It was a line she was scared of. It was an unspoken equator for her hemispheres.

  9. Equator, that was what separated them these days. At least he hoped so, that she wouldn’t be foolish enough to come anywhere near this part of the world. There was also the equator in his feelings and that she had broken with terrifying ease once.

  10. Somehow he’d moved from the peripheral to a fixed point in her life. She didn’t want him to be center of everything, but it turned out that way. Getting closer was a no brainer, he gave her balance, and he was hot as hell.

  11. gotta get closer to it
    where the sun
    glows

    and the closer i get
the wind is less and less
    full of water
    full of salt

the equator is far from me
    I’m above it
    where the sun
    does not glow

    the farther I am
    the wind holds the salt
    holds the water

    and I can barely breathe

  12. The divider of the earth. The center of this world. I think of the tropics, heat, South America. I think of exotic animals.

  13. I was at the equator of my feelings at that moment. I was split in half. I could have sailed north into the colder comforts, the trappings and joy of hearth, or I could have gone south into the humid, dank, exciting forests and the unknown.

  14. Whenever I think of ‘equator,’ I think of someone who interrupts an argument. They make things equal again. Is that wrong? My strange brain refuses to let me read ‘equator’ as its original meaning and always puts in the other word.

    the line
    the place

  19. I’m going to leave this beach, and then we’re headed north, as far north as we can go, until we see land. We’re not going to fall off the edge of the horizon, and we’re not going to get burnt by the forge that made the sun.

  20. Anything that has a shape where there is a definite beginning and end. There you will find that part of that object that can be quite easily determined as the middle. This middle can be called the equator and it does not necessarily mean the middle of the planet.

    Not true.
The farthest I’ve ever told anyone I’ve been.

  22. The rainbow stretched across the equator, and the people underneath it only gazed and point their fingers, taking multiple pictures. It was the first time a rainbow like this appeared in front of their eyes; the rainbow looked surreal, almost magical. It was stretched across the equator, across the world with its bright colors of red, purple, pink, and blue. A little girl with a ponytail looked confused as she talked to her mother who was standing behind her, confused.

“Mommy, why is the rainbow weird?”

  23. Don Pizarro had finally reached the equator in South America, after a very long and arduous journey. Hacking through the jungle overgrowth, he was surprised to see no signs, no large red line, nothing to mark this point on his trip.

down my fingers into my lap

    and feel like a child
and a grandmother all at once
and pile my hair on top of my head
    and never feel sweaty
and dance barefoot in the sand
and sit next to a fire
    kissing everyone i wish
    i were friends with

    Naomi Tomlin
  28. Oh I would rather be at the center, the equator of my soul, spirit, mind, body. To be at the center means that nothing would topple you, it would just leave you warm, balanced, whole, in infinity.

  31. south of the equator lived a little girl. she owned a horse and a turtle, but she really wanted a dog and a cake more than anything else in the world. happily, her horse and turtle were not jealous creatures: they loved her very dearly and they would have been very glad should her wishes come true.

that did not however mean that they were overly enthusiastic when she took them aside, one day, to tell them about her next adventure to get her heart’s contents — to which they were graciously invited.

    let me smear your face
    in hazing and wish you
    never signed that f’n contract
(seemed so admirable at the time)

    Knees bloody and nose-whipped –
    hair muck of who knows
    crossed that imaginary line
    navybound and trying to
    out-men the boys
    who talked their
