"Order, ORDER!" The double tap of the hammer rang in my ears. A slight groan, mostly from the accusation. The defence smirked. Just smirked. I found something off about it, but nobody else seemed to note.
"Case dismissed. Not guilty."
I mumbled under my breath. "You old sod." And looked at the rest of the jury with contempt. Sure.
I sat on the bow of my 'ship' and sipped idly from a glass. When I say 'my ship' I mean the one I chartered, but still.
Same thing.
The crew I hired on labour behind me. I'm not sure if they sound a little mutinuous as I don't often hire these contraptions, but I can't say I like the direction their converse heads.
I stormed into the room. Flicked the light switch on, and gazed into the eyes of a family of mice. Snarled. They ran. Then I ran and slammed the generator on. Fans whirred, more lights flickered and I heard a groan behind me. Claws extended, I turned.
A resounding bang echoed in my ears. Something blew out from behind me as I ran but I didn't care to look behind me. The sound of the IV hooked up to me, ringing in my ears. That annoying sound, repetitive, but which made me oh so glad at the time.
Oh so glad I was alive.
But if I knew what would come after death, I would have been willing that beeping sound to cut out into that long, drawn out drone. The drone of death. Because the afterlife, that place, it's much better than over here..
I wrapped my shroud about myself and shivered under the corrugated roof that was my 'shelter'. Our shelter. The ten or so others that populated the - usually - uncramped space literally jammed the place packed with fleshy meat.
Easy targets for the dogs and bombs outside. We could only pray. Pray that our shelter stood.
She jogged along the pathway. Hips swaying. I merely followed in her tracks, my movements matching hers. My arms swaying in time with her stride, matching her every move. My fingers twitching and changing the playlist like she did. Everything she did I matched. And she didn't even notice.
For I was just her shadow, sitting in the background.
