Staring at the moon, he clenched his hands into fists. Somewhere behind him he heard a car alarm go off, but all of his attetion remained focused on the shadows passing her silver face. He didn't dare look away until he saw that light again.

It was plain he understood his meaning, but what if he ignored it? Or, since he'd always thought of Henry as an idiot, he might simply fail to follow through. "Maybe," he said thoughtfully to the frosty window, "I ought to get Margaret in on this."
He stood with his back to the wind, blowing bubbles and watching them fly away. I couldn't imagine what about them transfixed him so, but perhaps I was on the wrong side to tell. After he built them and let them go, I was left fighting the wind to catch them, and they always popped on my hand.
"Christ," he moaned, feeling aroud the edge of the ditch for his glasses.
"You called?" Jeremey said from somewhere by his foot.
"Don't even start. The last thing we need is a smiting. I think the keys have fallen into that pipe, but check if they're down there with you."
"Yeah!" she hollered, throwing her hands in the air as she bobbed through the pool. "That was a blast!"
"Yeah," Oliver said faintly, trying to grab hold of the siding as the jets funneled them through the pass with the other tubers.
"I want you to know something," she said softly, watching the sun light up the cathedral's spires. "I always knew I liked you, and you know that, but now I want it to be forever."
"Forever?" he asked with a smile, gently touching. "I think the danger's made you blunt."
She popped the ice cream in her mouth and hummed with delight. "This is the best."
"Isn't it?" Haley said, adding whipped cream. "I think we need some hot fudge."
"Oh, let me put it in the microwave," she said, getting up and going to the fridge.
"Don't move," she ordered, pressing her heels into the stone. "I'm coming to get you!"
"Oh," he said sarcastically, tightening his grip on the rail, "I am saved. What have I to fear now, with that glowing prospect held in my heart?"
"If you're snarky, James, I'll leave you there."
"You've got a few more seconds," he whispered to her. "Then I'm gonna pull the lights and signal Christian."
"That's more than enough time," she said, reaching farther into the machine. "I've got its guts in my hand right now."
