I saw Beyoncé wearing them, and I just knew I had to get them. As soon as I slung them over my ears, and the dark lenses shaded my view of the world, I thought they would change life forever. And when I started seeing dozens of lightly colored figures wandering around the cemetery when I later went to see my mom, I knew.
The ear that drooped with the weight of a dozen earrings hung almost to her shoulder. The lobes were cluttered with hoops, studs, sparkling in the erratic sunshine's blinking through the trees, shining in the faces of those who walked past. For a brief moment, the world was bright, and glittering, and as beautiful as it once was, when childhood reigned supreme, and twinkies didn't make any difference. And then the glow is gone, replaced by a subtle darkness, so discreet you would think it wasn't there. But it always is. And it makes cupcakes fattening.
I sit at my desk, triumphant. The printer has finished its work, and so have I. I stand. I dance. I sit. I procrastinate.
He enticed her, holding the thin apple slice just of reach and smiling. She reached up with her short, fat fingers and tried to snatch it away. She let out a high pitched giggle and scream and he laughed, lowering the apple slice until she was just able to snag it away.
