  1. He flattened his derby hat anxiously against his leg. “And just how much money do you need, anyway?”

  2. The small children waited impatiently with their handmade wooden cars in tow. My son was the fourth in line, with a yellow-painted square of wood with wheels bigger than the body, it seemed. he looked sheepishly at me and smiled. I returned it with a small wave and he looked away to talk to his friend behind him.
    Did I love him enough?
I hoped that the love I had given him in his seven years would be enough to cradle him through adulthood. Because today is the day I ran out. Now that I had no more love left, it was time for me to go.
Please become a stronger person than me, I thought.
“I’m going for a little ride,” I would tell him while he drifted off to sleep tonight.
As he approached the track for his car, he gave me a glance, and sent the car on its way.

  4. She struck me as awkward at first. Her derby shoes didn’t seem to fit the dress she wore so complimentary to her body. But it was only when it occurred to me that I didn’t care about her awkwardness, that I began to feel a familiar warmth in my heart towards her.

  5. Leaning up against the horse’s neck, my fingers clinging to the reins as if they were a lifeline. I’d spent my lifetime training for this thing, and I wasn’t about to let it go. Nellie was breathing hard beneath me.

  8. Don’t think about the words you write.
Eliminate all train of thought and
    remember the way you feel,
because your feelings guide the words
you write. Your heart is tied to your fingers.

  9. It was something they’d never been to before, and yet was wholly fascinating. Each one of them had their own take on it, too. Ellis shouted and jumped for joy and was generally obnoxious, in that sportsfan sort of way. Keith leaned over the railing and got beaned in the head for his trouble. And Nick– Nick was quiet. Not that he wasn’t enjoying himself. But it was a measure of pride with him, that he NOT stoop to the rednecks’ level.

  10. I can only think of the Kentucky derby. With the horses, ya know? How cool would it be to be one of those jockeys? I’m short enough to be one… probably not light enough though…

  11. Roller derby girls with their trendy perms and their muscular legs and their “I’m too good for you!” giggles; I hated them. I thought that maybe I could will Jemma to break a leg, twist an ankle. That maybe if I stared her down hard enough, she’d lose her balance and wreak havoc on their show. Everyone would hate her then. Then I’d stand a fighting chance at becoming the Prom Queen of 1986.

What a sick thought! All fantasy, I’m sure.

    Your girl
    She always looks beautifull
    But tonight she shines

    Your horse pulls ahead
    And you get to win,
    to be lucky
for one day in your life.

  18. The first time I saw them I thought they were amazing. I thought they moved so fast and with such certainty that they couldn’t possibly lose.
The second time, I realized, not only were they slow and lumbering, but that strength and fire I thought I saw was just cheap beer and laughter.

  19. the home run derby was always the best part of their practice. I sat in my normal spot under the tree while all the guys lined up for their turn. I watched not one of them hit it over. Practice ended and I went onto the field. Tossing the ball up and swinging the bat, the ball soared over the fence, hooooome run. Why wouldn’t they give me a chance to play

  22. the horse derby was so much fun.I liked wearing my big hat and looking at all of the other big hats. I think mine was the best. I like to show off and know that I am the prettiest. I have to look around at my competition and show that I am the best and no one can top MY hat. Look at me and be jealous. I will only get better. hahahahahah

    Kelsie
  23. Donovan sported his brown derby hat while watching his girlfriend at the roller derby, a Victorian appearance at an otherwise neon-helmeted, striped-shoulder pad event. As he watched the girls race around the floor, wheels squeaking as they maneuvered, he heard a rough voice behind him ask, “Where’s Holmes, Doctor Watson?”

    Belinda Roddie
  24. Kentucky. Avivah. She misses the rain, misses how it pours. It never pours here. All it can summon is a halfassed attempt. Too dry.

  25. As the morning of the Derby dawned, she looked anxiously around. Would anyone know that this race meant more than mint juleps and fancy hats? Would anyone know that little boy’s life depended on how this race turned out.

    Kathryn Biel

But I already bought a hat. I love hats. Almost as much as I love drinking. But if I have to see my mother crying one more time, I don’t think I could take it.

  30. The Brown Derby was the place to be in Hollywood back in the day. A man who ran a famous upscale restaurant said he could sell food out of anywhere and be successful…even out of a hat. So he built a restaurant in the shape of a brown derby hat…and the rest is history.

  31. along the track of life.
one foot in front of the other
bet against the odds of humanity

    that silver lining
will become a clear ray of sunshine
and i will dance along the track
the finish line my hearts desires.
not lacking the depth to achieve.

  32. Derby. First, thoughts of racehorses blustering through the dust. Biting at the metal bits in their mouth, pushing to go faster and faster. I hear stampeding hoofs, loud whoops of the jockeys as they lean forward with nothing but determination and glee in their eyes. I imagine the tunnel vision of these magnificent creatures; their visions narrowed down to a pinpoint. Derby. A true feat of endurance, determination, and strength. The thundering is, and always will be, graceful.

  33. The car was yellow with a stripe of black and white checkers on the sides, almost like a cab except for the bug-eyed headlights and the pipe belching smoke out the back end. Had it ever been up to any kind of regulations? There was only two doors, and the seats were covered in cracked leather like a WWII fighter pilot jacket.

  36. Relationships aren’t a race. It isn’t a derby where jockeys speed towards a finish line. Real relationships are a journey, through the ups, downs, and obstacles. There is no end being sought because one should want the journey to last forever.

  37. He checked his left shoe.
The derby! Not even losing the entire leg could have kept him away from that deceptively green grass, he thought.
Then he heard the referee’s whistle, and the stadium detonated.

  38. The road to horse racing. The best of the best attend. Kentucky. Leads to Triple Crown. Potentially. Depending on how good of a jockey you are. Derbys involve horses of course. Lots of them. I’m not much of a horse fan but must admit I enjoy the derbys. Is derby plural with an s on the end or with an ie then s?
