  8. I sat in the bathroom stall, wondering what the hell I was doing in that bar in the first place. I heard someone come into the bathroom, loudly blathering to a friend who probably wasn’t listening, about some girl he had seen the previous night. I felt a sudden urge to shoot him.

  9. I walked into the barn, and down the aisle. And as I reached the end I could see the door to his stall, and out into his corral. It had rained during the night and he was happily caked in mud, face in the grass, eating. I whistled, and my horses head jerked up, ears pricked. Shining bright orange int he sun, he neighed in soft greeting, andbled over, hooves squishing in the mud beneath his feat. I still have days where I watch him come to me in awe, no way such a creature could be mine. Moreazing still because it is not the bill of sale, or the nameplate on his door. It’s his ownership of my heart, his soft knicker, and the conscious choice he makes every day to meet me half way in greeting.

  11. She turned the key again, moved her foot to the gas and tensed as she let out the clutch. She swore as the car shuddered and stalled yet again. She leaned her forehead against the steering wheel and tried not to cry. She would never be there on time now. She would never get to see him before he left. She blinked the tears away, sat back and turned the key again. She had to be there.

  18. The stall in the barn was full of hay. The cows were coming in one by one. I thought the old farmer looked tired as he trailed in behind his herd. His face showed signs of years of hard work. I think he reminded me of my Grandpa who had worked all his life on the farm. There was no time for vacations or long weekends. It was always a battle between Grandpa and Mother Nature. He would work daylight to dark in order to beat an incoming storm. And one might ask for what? The answer being displayed as each person told a story at his visitation. The words of honesty and integrity were a common thread. The answer being his cows needed that stall in the barn to be full.

  40. I saw my name next to me while I was shitting. It was not in my handwriting. It looked like it was etched in the side of the wall with a compass and the paint flakes were one the floor. ‘Call # for a good time, I love little boys.’ That was not true. Nothing about it was true, but it was as solid as the Berlin Wall from space.
