  1. She lay quietly, keeping as still as possible under the tulips. So many colours mixed together above her but one tulip stood out. One solitary, pure black tulip lay just ahead of her, a dark omen. She snuggled closer to the stem of a red one and hoped its leaves shielded her from view as the immense shadow of the sky creature passed over her. Fear bubbled up inside her and she gave an involuntary shiver. Had sky creature seen that? The shadow moved on. She remained hidden and frozen until it had disappeared, then still more for a long time after that. Finally feeling safe, Caterpillar Kate cautiously continued her journey.

  2. It was raining when I first went to the Tulip Festival. I remember seeing performers taking off their wooden shoes in the parking lot and a man carving wooden shoes for me and bringing home wooden tulips. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I was able to climb the windmill and look at the fields of tulips.

  3. it’s tulip
    season
    and i wonder
    why it brings
    such joy.
    it must remind
    me of a time
    my mother
    was truly
    happy.
    how i wish
    a bouquet
    would melt
    away the sadness
    winter hailed
    onto her soul.
    how i wish
    the ones i drew
    when i was four
    would’ve kept her
    afloat.
    i promise
    i’d plant
    a garden
    if that meant
    i’d get to
    keep her
    for a while more.

  5. The tulips in Genevieve’s garden were fragrant and tinged with blood. She burst into tears when she first discovered what had happened to them — not only was there a killer at large, but her precious flowers had been ruined! Oh, what was a woman to do?

  6. The tulip garden surrounded the yard, with reds on the outside, yellows in the middle and whites in the innermost circle. She liked the flowers and the colors but wished that the gardener had planted them a bit more naturally, meaning randomly.
