  7. John walked down the cold, frostbitten city streets. No sounds could be heard that night- nothing out of the ordinary. The sound of a light flickering. The sound of a window shattering or of a car’s alarm. As the apartment lights began to switch off, John knew that the nightly curfew had begun. He waited five minutes, until the street lights too, began to dim and flicker. No one of any sanity would be out now, and this made John shudder. He felt like someone was watching him from the shadows, although that could have just been his fear, combined with the knowledge that he was doing something forbidden. As the last street light slowly flickered off, John turned, and, freezing any doubt within him, he pulled his parka up over his head for the warmth and continued to walk.

  9. Morris and Clara were walking along the edge of the dark zone. When the settlers first arrived, it had been a great spot for a romantic walk, affording the privacy of twilight, and a landscape reasonably clear of plant growth, as everything had died out in the cold of the eighty year night. Now, though, it was awash with people looking for the “monster”, but at least the committee had prohibited people from flashing lights into it, so it was once again a nice place for a relaxing walk. “If there really is a monster,” said Clara, “we should be searching for it. People aren’t searching for it out of some morbid curiosity, they’re scared!”
“If there is a monster,” Morris responded, ” so far it’s been leaving us alone, and maybe that’s for the best! Even if it’s as cute as a puppy, it could carry some disease that could wipe us out in a week!”

  10. In my head, I’m walking by the subject so heavy in the air. So heavy on our hearts. It shifts to move in front of me. I walk around it. Trying to get to you. But the obvious is in front of me. It’s an obstacle that neither of us can get around. Until you lie in the palm of my body and I wrap my arms around you. Until our legs intertwine and you rest your head back against my shoulder. It’s then that I stop walking and allow myself to fall in love with you.

Suddenly, a whale leapt from the depths, and half the river seemed to be displaced with it’s splash!

  32. I had been running for so long. Running to things, running away from others. Always running, never walking. I was Lepus’ cousin. And now that it’s over, now that my time has passed. I look back, and I wish I had taken a little time to just walk. So I turned, and with a steady tread, I walked. I was done rushing into everything. Now, I walked, facing everything as constant and steady, no longer Lepus- I am Testudine. And I would face this new-chapter open-minded, and without fear.
