I was complete until the lever broke. Then everything began to fall apart; first the legs, then the arms, and finally my head toppled from its trunk. What do all the passers-by think when they see the jumble of disassembled pieces on the ground? I shudder to think.

vase

The vase spread in glittering particles about my bare feet. I noticed a tickle as they struck my skin, and a few flecks of scarlet blood oozed out to form shining domes on the pale flesh.

Velvet is anonymous. Soft, and lush and thick to the touch, like fur, and flesh, and the moment of orgasm. It has no identity, and it needs none, for it is a suggestion of so much more.

The luminol glowed sickly in the gloom of the garage. Great patches of bluish light splattered the stained cement floor. The washing machine and dryer squatted against the wall, waiting. Blood, or bleach?

She smiles but it fractures into a sob. Her lips quiver as she struggles to lift them, and her lower lip trembles violently. The tears are sweet and salty as they splash onto his cheeks and trickle into his mouth.

brave

He wasn't so brave, despite what other thought. His stomach wrapped itself in knots as he looked at the depth of the ravine. But he had an image to maintain, expectations to meet, something to prove. Always something to prove.

My heart dropped through the floor as the last card turned. Three hearts, and two cards remaining. Beads of sweat prickled the back of my neck, but I kept my breath measured. I had him pegged with a King-Jack, but maybe, just maybe, could they be hearts? My off-suit Ace-King--not a heart between them--were making my palm itch. Everything rode on this hand.

The starlight filtered through leafy silhouettes. A gentle wind swayed the branches overhead, and the distant light winked and twinkled, like an endless ball of whirling courtesans and sly courtiers weaving through the shadows of a pillared hall.

gong

The gong shimmered as echos rang from the courtyard walls. Peasants paused, pitchforks frozen in hands. Bales of hay held their breath on the cart, rough fingers wrapped around their brown twine, but no longer hefting the weight.

train

The black snake rumbled through the gloom, belching forth plumes of smoke and steam that obscured the emerging stars. Wheels screeched in protest as it hurtled around a curve, and as the track straightened abruptly the lights suspended from the raised ceiling of the dining car were set swinging, painting murals of light and shadow across the empty tables and chairs.
