  1. It’s late at night–after hardly any sleep–when the images come to her. There is a certain foreignness in what she sees (twisted heaps of scrap metal, burning houses, ash gray skies and permanent mounds of snow that aren’t snow at all), but she knows. The things writhing under her eyelids bear a certain weight of familiarity, too.
But she swears that she will take these visions to her shallow grave.
She knows what they did to the last person who saw the future.

  2. They sat underneath the willow tree back behind the old barn, where the hay was still kept. “You have a potato bug on your shirt.”

Drought taken by rain, silence murdered by thunder.
She was his storm, finally changing the weather
Tearing down the walls he thought would last forever.

  11. For some reason the awkward phrase “under my skin” crops up, as if to signal some kind of discomfort with intimacy. I know sometimes I’ve thought about issues of intimacy, and whether I fear it, but the reality is that I don’t think that’s the case. There are things that I fear, but sharing myself with someone is not one of them. And yet the word “under” implies a feeling of being submerged, and that I do sometimes feel.

  20. I am beginning to under-stand that writing under-stand does not really fall under the category of writing about under! What does? Well, to begin with I must define what ‘under’ is. I mean, it is not like it is the same as under in underwear, right? The meaning is ‘below’ or ‘lesser than’. These two mean different things. One deals with the geographic angle of it and the other in quantitative terms.

  21. It seems underneath the great apple tree in my grandfather’s orchard held more than just apples. Resting underneath the entanglement of roots and dirt, leaves and bugs, was the smallest opening; only I could fit through. As a 6 year old, naturally I could fit through almost any and all small openings and cracks, but when I went and fell through this one, something else happened entirely. My initial thought was darkness, and then, the realization that I was not in fact hitting any kind of ground, but rather I was falling. Being only 6, I was enthralled at the thought and yet terrified at the same time.

  35. Her silhouette is precariously close to the edge of the roof. When I call out to her, she turns, and I can see how sunken she is; how hollowed her cheeks are. I can see she is not the narcissistic, over confident girl she was two months ago. She is a mere ghost of the girl she used to be.

“What are you doing up here?” I ask.

She doesn’t respond, but smiles in response, stretching her translucent skin across her skeletal face, and making the purple under her eyes more prominent. She spreads her arms a little, like she’s about to take flight, or…

My eyes widen as realization hits me, and I scream out, “No!”

But it’s too late. She closes her eyes, a look of serene peace spreading over her ghastly face, as she leans back over the edge and plummets to the ground below.
